A big new building is on the horizon for Elizabethtown College.

At the Dec. 7 Elizabethtown Borough Council meeting, college personnel provided an overview of the facility’s projects over the next couple of years, with the most primary project featuring a new 60,000 square foot sports, fitness and wellness center. The “Bowers Center” will house an indoor running track, multipurpose area and classroom space, with the exterior available for a student gathering terrace, parking area and recreational student use. Construction is expected to begin in March 2018 with a possible opening in August 2019.

Other improvements over the next few years may include residence halls and a trail extension to tie into the borough trail system near the school. Borough council members expressed concern about maintaining easy access from the borough into the campus and connectivity around the campus, and asked the college to continue to keep that in mind while working on project outlines.

Borough Council approved a resolution to support the Elizabethtown Fire Department by allocating $97,424 to the department, which will help fund 42 percent of the department’s annual operating expenses. In other action, the borough approved a resolution to allocate $48,000 toward funding the Elizabethtown Public Library’s annual operating expenses.

The next meeting to discuss the 2018 proposed budget will be held Dec. 16, 6 p.m., in the Borough Building.
