Carolyn Rae Hess, of Hershey, passed away on Monday, November 28th.
Born October 21, 1926, in Hershey, PA, to Edwin and Grace Schwenk, Carolyn was the middle of seven children with four sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Hershey High and Hershey Jr. College, where she earned an associate’s degree.
Carolyn eventually met Milton Hershey boy, Don Hess, and they married on October 1, 1949. Their 71+ years of marriage were full of abundant blessings and exciting adventures. She was a “Hershey Girl” through and through, having lived most of her life there. She and Don temporarily relocated their family of five to California for Don’s work, but returned to the sweet scents of ChocolateTown, USA, four years later. They loved to travel, having visited an impressive 47 countries together.
With a passion for music, Carolyn played in the school band and orchestra, and sang in the chorus. She taught herself to play piano and was honored with emeritus status as a longtime church choir member. Bird watching and gardening were some of her favorite hobbies, but she was also well known for her magic in the kitchen… cooking, baking, and always making the most and the best Christmas cookies!
She loved to give back as much as possible, serving as a Girl Scout leader, a proud member of the Milton Hershey Alumni Wives and Hershey Horticulture Clubs, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels.
Carolyn was a strong and faithful, lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran in Hershey, where she served many years on the council and as a choir alto.
Carolyn was much loved and will be missed and forever cherished by all who knew her. She is survived by children: Donna (daughter) and her husband, Dan Duppstadt; Susan (daughter) and her husband, Ray Boroughs; and Nancy (daughter), and her husband, Mark Frattarole. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jason, Chad, Ryan, Lauren, Reid, Elizabeth and Anthony; and 12+ great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey, PA 17033, on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church.
