Zoning Hearing Notice

Case No. 2022-V-1

The Hummelstown Zoning Hearing Board will meet on Wednesday April 27, 2022 at 7:00 PM at the Hummelstown Borough Building, 261 Quarry Rd., Hummelstown, PA to hear a request from the Lower Dauphin School District, 291 E. Main St., Hummelstown, PA 17036, for property owned by them at 201 S. Hanover St. (L.D. High School – Tax Parcel 31-54-1) for two (2) variances. The School District is proposing to replace the existing 50 sq. ft. message board sign along S. Hanover St. with a new 43.2 sq. ft. sign, which would include a 27.2 sq. ft. Electronic/Digital Sign. The property in question is in the Institutional Zoning District. The variances needed for said project are as follows:

1. Section 1809.1.E – This section states that Electronic Signs which change from one static image to another static image with a minimum of 10 seconds between changes shall not be prohibited in all districts, but will be permitted in the Commercial General, Commercial Warehousing and Light Industrial Zoning Districts. All conforming electronic signs must comply with the size and location requirements set forth in said districts. Since Electronic Signs are not permitted in the Institutional Zoning District, a variance is required.

2. Section 1812.1.B/1803.1.F –

Non-Conforming Signs/ Signs permitted in the Institutional Zoning District – These sections state that existing signs that are non-conforming by reason of dimensions may continue in their present location until replacement or rebuilding becomes necessary, at which time a zoning permit will be required, and the sign brought into conformity with this part. Signs in the Institutional Zoning District are permitted to be a maximum of 30 sq. ft. The existing sign is 50 sq. ft. and the new sign would be 43.2 sq. ft. Although the new sign is smaller than the original, it is still greater than 30 sq. ft. and would require a variance from this requirement.

For more information, contact the Borough office at 566-2555, 261 Quarry Rd., Hummelstown.
