Susan Rhine McLure of Hummelstown, passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at home with family by her side.
Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Margaret A. Walters Rhine.
Sue retired in 2003 from Lower Dauphin High School after 33 years of service where she taught Social Studies and coached basketball, gymnastics and golf. She was also a PIAA official in basketball and softball.
Sue was a graduate of Penn State University where she received both her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and her Master’s in Education. While at Penn State, she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and the Varsity S Club, and participated in the Women’s Golf Program.
A member of Hershey Country Club, Sue served as Past President of the Board of Governors, and was a member of the 9 Hole Bunker Club.
Politically-minded, Sue was very active in the Dauphin County Republican party, and was also former President of the League of Women Voters in Pennsylvania. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed shopping. Sue was an amazing woman, a devoted wife and mother, and supportive teacher, coach and mentor who will be dearly missed.
Sue is survived by her husband of 33 years, W. Benjamin McLure whom she married on May 20, 1989; one son, Wade K. Ewing husband of Christine of Huntsville, Ala.; two step-children, Jill F. McLure and Michael D. McLure husband of Lori Etchberger both of Hummelstown; three grandchildren, Cuinn J. O’Donnell of State College, Fiona A. Ewing of Huntsville, and Amanda J. Feige wife of Alex of Springfield, Va.; one great-grandson, Oliver A. Feige; and her beloved cat, Buford II.
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter Richmers and Richard Richmers, and a sister, Diane Richmers.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Sue’s caregiver of four years, Alma Garcia, her neurologist, Dr. Raymond Reichwein, and to Residential Home Hospice for the genuine care and concern each provided Sue and her family.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown, with Pastor Tom Graham officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lower Dauphin Falcon Foundation, 291 E. Main St., Hummelstown, PA 17036.
To properly celebrate Sue, the family requests those attending wear Penn State colors or your favorite golf shirt.
